Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said a new draft law will send nearly all military conscripts to the Army in a radical move designed to end the decades-old practice of political favors (“rousfetia”) that has weakened the armed forces.
Speaking candidly before a parliamentary committee, Mr. Dendias said the current system is broken.
“How many [Navy] sailors are currently serving on ships? Less than 5%,” he stated. “We all know what really happens. Every minister, regardless of party, faces pressure if a conscript is assigned to a ship.”
The proposed reform will largely end general conscription for the Navy and Air Force, with a few exceptions for specialists.
Mr. Dendias explained to independent MP and retired Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis that the change is necessary to address a 10% personnel shortfall and bolster the Army, where conscripts are most needed.
The draft law is part of a broader effort to professionalize the military, reduce patronage, and improve operational readiness.
