Athens Metro gets first major upgrade in rail lines

The Athens Metro will get its first major upgrade since it first started operations 25 years ago, following the signing of contracts on Thursday worth a total of 7.3 million euros.

Signing the contract to replace 32 km of rail line superstructure in Lines 2 and 3 (Sepolia-Dafni, Monastiraki-Ethniki Amyna, respectively) was the consortium ‘Leonardos Rigas Technical SA’ and ‘Railway Projects Anonymous Contracting Construction Company’ and representatives of STASY (Urban Rail Transport). The signing took place at the Infrastructure & Transport Ministry in the presence of Alternate Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis and Transport Secretary General Stelios Sakaretsios. The contract is worth 4,841,900 euros (plus VAT) and was reviewed prior to signing by the Hellenic Court of Audit.

At the same time, the delivery of train rails is ongoing at the STASY depots. The contractor is ‘Artemis Anonymous Commercial Manufacturing Company of Industrial Metal Products” and the contract is worth 2,441,219 euros (plus VAT).

The project is part of preventative maintenance and targeted upgrade of the entire network, and focuses on Lines 2 and 3 (Red and Blue lines), where wear and tear is greatest. Works are expected to start directly and are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
