Top Global Investors Increase Stakes in Greek Market

Major international investors are boosting their holdings in the Greek stock market, signaling renewed confidence after the country regained its investment-grade credit rating.

According to the Bank of Greece, offers for Greek assets surged to nearly 120 billion euros in 2024. The upgrade has helped drive 16.5 billion euros into Greek stocks and bonds over the past two years.

Prominent investors have taken significant positions in Greek banks. Italy’s UniCredit recently increased its stake in Alpha Bank, while Fairfax Financial, led by Prem Watsa, holds a major share of Eurobank. Investor John Paulson also owns a large stake in Piraeus Bank.

Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, one of the world’s largest, held investments in 40 companies on the Athens Stock Exchange worth about 710 million euros at the end of 2024. This influx follows Greece’s significant economic recovery.
