Boy, 13, Killed on Electric Scooter in Southern Greece as Safety Debate Reignites

A 13-year-old boy has died after his electric scooter collided head-on with a car on a main road in the village of Makrisia in southern Greece, the latest fatality in a growing series of accidents involving micro-mobility devices on public roads.

The boy was traveling from the Profitis Ilias area toward the village center when he swerved into the oncoming lane to avoid a parked vehicle and was struck by an approaching car.

Emergency services rushed him to Krestena Hospital, where doctors performed resuscitation before he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. No charges have been filed pending a full forensic reconstruction of the crash by the Krestena Police Department.

The accident has reignited a national debate about electric scooter safety, particularly the use of such devices by minors on public roads.

Greek law restricts high-speed e-scooters from main thoroughfares and requires helmet use, but enforcement — especially in rural areas — remains inconsistent and widely acknowledged as inadequate.

Electric scooter fatalities and serious injuries have increased sharply across Greece in recent years as the devices have proliferated among younger users, prompting repeated calls from road safety advocates and medical professionals for stricter age restrictions, mandatory safety equipment and more rigorous enforcement of existing rules.

The village of Makrisia is in mourning.

Local community leaders expressed shock at the loss of a child whose death, they said, did not have to happen.
