An autopsy on the body of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has left more questions than answers, with the precise cause of his cardiac arrest still unclear pending toxicology results expected in about three weeks.
The autopsy was conducted by state medical examiners Konstantinos Kouvaris and Nikos Kalogrias. Sotiris Bouzianis, a former Athens medical examiner, observed on behalf of the Mazonakis family as their appointed technical adviser.
Examiners found Mr. Mazonakis’s liver, heart and veins in reasonably good condition, and the family’s lawyer said the exam showed no evidence of pre-existing heart disease — a finding the family says will support a request to upgrade the criminal charges against the two doctors already under investigation in his death. Investigators are also comparing needle marks on Mr. Mazonakis’s hands with the width of two intravenous catheters used during the procedure at the Kolonaki clinic, and are still seeking confirmation on whether paramedics or hospital staff administered any intravenous fluids before his death.
Examiners collected samples for toxicology and histology testing, which are expected to clarify what triggered the cardiac arrest and whether Mr. Mazonakis had alcohol or other substances in his system, or received an unauthorized infusion.
Pinpointing the exact time of death may prove impossible. Police have footage showing Mr. Mazonakis entering the clinic around 1 p.m., with emergency services not called for roughly three hours.
