New Democracy Leads by 15 Points but Cost-of-Living Frustration Tempers Public Confidence

Greece’s ruling New Democracy party holds a commanding 15-point lead over all rivals, but public confidence in the government’s handling of inflation and high prices is evenly split, according to a Pulse poll for SKAI TV conducted May 3-5.

New Democracy stands at 29.5 percent in vote estimation, with PASOK a distant second at 14.5 percent. Greek Solution and Course of Freedom follow at 9 percent each, the Communist Party at 8 percent, and a collapsing SYRIZA at just 4.5 percent — a fraction of the support that made it Greece’s governing party less than a decade ago.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis faces a public divide on domestic policy: 45 percent of respondents view the government’s cost-of-living interventions as heading in the right direction, while 43 percent consider them inadequate or misdirected.

On foreign policy, approval is slightly stronger at 50 percent, with 40 percent expressing disapproval.

Regional anxiety is running high. Some 76 percent of respondents said their concern over Middle East escalations has either increased or remained at elevated levels following recent hostilities — a significant backdrop for a government that has positioned Greece as an active diplomatic broker in the crisis.

The poll also tested appetite for new political formations.

A hypothetical party led by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras drew 20 percent positive interest, while a movement led by Tempe disaster advocate Maria Karystianou attracted 21 percent.

A potential party under former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras registered just 12 percent.

Both Mr. Tsipras and Mrs. Karystianou have signaled plans to formally enter the political arena before the next general election.
