The Athens Urban Picnic is set to return this May Day, transforming Plato’s Academy Park into a lively, open-air festival for families with free admission and an all-day celebration of creativity, music, and environmental learning.
Scheduled for Thursday, the event is part of the Athens Municipality’s Spring Festival and aims to bring residents together for a day of sunshine, food, and a festive atmosphere in one of the city’s greenest urban spaces.
The program features a variety of hands-on activities for children, live DJ sets, theatrical performances, and interactive games, all designed to blend entertainment with education in a natural setting.
- Highlights of the May Day Program (12:00–20:00)
- Face Painting & Glitter Tattoos (12:00–15:00): Children can enjoy colorful face painting and shimmering glitter tattoos.
- Eco-Games & Crafts (12:00–18:00): Activities include creating flower crowns from recycled paper, crafting tulip cards from plastic spoons, building microscopes from detergent bottles, and learning waste-sorting through playful games.
- Nature Games (12:30–17:30): Rotating sessions will feature butterfly-themed scavenger hunts, nature treasure hunts, tug-of-war, limbo, balloon races, mega Jenga, tic-tac-toe, and more.
- Theater Performance – “The Pollen Mystery” (13:00–14:00): An environmental play for children will explore the vital role of bees in nature.
- Pottery Wheel Workshop (13:30–18:30): A hands-on workshop will allow children to create their own vases, bowls, and plates with clay.
- DJ Set by Mary Margeli of Hit 88.9 (14:00–15:00)
- Dinoverse – Meet Blue (14:00–18:00): Blue, described as a friendly teen Tyrannosaurus, will join the festivities for interactive fun, photos, and dancing.
- Felipe’s Bubble Show (14:30–15:50): A whimsical spectacle of soaring bubbles and magical music will enchant young spectators.
- DJ Set by Eva Theotokatou of En Lefko 87.7 (17:30–18:30)
- Kids Radio Banda Concert (18:30–19:30): A musical performance from the team behind Kids Radio 88.6 will blend storytelling with catchy tunes for children and parents.
The event is scheduled to conclude at 20:00.
Organizers are inviting Athenians to bring their picnic baskets and celebrate May 1st in nature, in the heart of the city, through a blend of fun, learning, and springtime joy.
