Contracts for the restoration of the railway network in Thessaly and Central Greece after storm damage were signed at the Infrastructure & Transport Ministry on Monday.
The damage in the two regions’ railroads was caused by the ‘Daniel’ and ‘Elias’ storms in September 2023.
Infrastructure & Transport Minister Christos Dimas said the budget for both totals 450.12 million euros, with a completion horizon of 15 months as of today (April 28). “Tomorrow, in Larissa, we will sign the contracts related to restoring the road network,” Dimas said. Both railway and road works are budgeted at 1.35 billion euros.
The four railway projects covered by the contract include both railway lines on the Athens-Thessaloniki route (from Domokos to Krannonas); the Paleofarsalos-Kalabaka single line; the Larissa-Volos single line at three specific sites; and the restoration of the signalling, ETCS L1, telemanagement and eletric mobility systems of the two railway lines on the Athens-Thessaloniki route (from Paleofarsalos to Krannonas).
As Dimas said, the total amount for both railroad and road repairs “is an extremely high amount, proving the extent of damage caused by the storm and the urgent need resulting for the national economy in order to guarantee the funding to restore damage to public infrastructure. In order to make these projects feasible, 600 million euros have been allocated from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, while the remaining 735 million euros will be drawn from national funds.”
Present at the signing were Alternate National Economy & Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis, Alternate Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis, and high-level managers of the companies Metka, Avax, Aktor, and Alstom. Several ministers and deputies also attended the signing at the ministry.
