Thessaloniki: 44-year-old man wanted for sabotage in Russia arrested and released

A 44-year-old man was arrested in Thessaloniki on charges stemming from a warrant issued by Russian authorities. He is accused of being an instigator in an alleged act of sabotage at a military equipment factory in Krasnodar, Russia.

He is a Greek national, born in Russia, whom the Russian judicial authorities accuse of having exchanged messages, via an encrypted application, with a suspicious person and the content of the blasting of a railway line adjacent to a factory producing military equipment.

According to prosecution documents sent by Russian authorities to Greece, the alleged communication related to the case took place in the summer of 2023, without providing further details about the incident.

The 44-year-old was arrested in the previous 24 hours by police officers of the Kordelio-Evosmos department and was taken to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Appeal Court of Thessaloniki.

However, he was released, and the extradition request was rejected, as he was a Greek citizen at the time of the alleged act, and the warrant was not European, with Russia considered a third country.
