UPDATE: According to Romania’s interim Defence Minister Radu Miruță, the commercial vessel YARA J reported a fire near Sulina on Wednesday evening, while two aerial targets were detected entering Romanian airspace. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the incidents were connected or whether a drone struck the ship. Miruță said the vessel reported the fire at 20:23. Assistance was initially requested, but the crew later confirmed the fire had been extinguished and that they were no longer in danger. The ship was reportedly empty and had been waiting in the area for several days. Crucially, Romania’s defence radars did not detect a drone approaching YARA J. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the vessel is heading to the Port of Constanța for a technical inspection to establish what happened. Earlier that evening, Romania detected two aerial targets entering its airspace over the Black Sea. Spanish F-18 fighter jets were scrambled, and emergency alerts were issued for parts of Tulcea and Galați counties. Radar contact with one target was lost over the sea. The second left Romanian airspace, moved toward Ukraine and was later destroyed by Ukrainian air defences near Reni, north of the Chilia branch. Miruță cautioned that losing radar contact does not necessarily mean a drone has been destroyed. He also said it is unrealistic to expect every aerial object over the Black Sea to be detected and intercepted. The minister called for a stronger allied presence in the Black Sea and said Romania should respond diplomatically to repeated airspace violations. He also proposed a joint letter with Bulgaria to NATO, saying his Bulgarian counterpart had agreed to sign it. As I said earlier, the drones violating Romanian airspace were detected just minutes before the distress call from the vessel YARA J near Sulina. We will see.
