A 27-year-old man confessed to fatally stabbing his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend, Pinelopi, on a bike path in this northwestern Greek city late Sunday, after initially telling police the couple had been attacked by masked robbers, authorities said.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the man traveled from his home in Aigaleo, near Athens, to Igoumenitsa to meet Pinelopi, with whom he had broken up weeks earlier, reportedly hoping to reconcile.
He stabbed her fatally before calling police himself, claiming he and Pinelopi had been robbed by four unidentified assailants.
A passerby had already discovered Pinelopi’s body and alerted authorities separately.
Officers arriving at the scene found Pinelopi dead at the path’s first kiosk and the man wounded nearby.
After being hospitalized, he initially maintained the robbery story, but investigators say he grew inconsistent under questioning and ultimately admitted to the killing, reportedly telling police, “We argued and I lost it.”
He then led officers to where he had discarded the knife.
A medical examiner found 10 stab wounds across Pinelopi’s body, including to her chest and back, two deep wounds to her neck, and one to her leg.
The suspect, under police guard at Filiates Hospital, sustained multiple self-inflicted wounds near his heart, including a punctured lung requiring drainage.
The man has claimed the confrontation began over a financial dispute, though authorities say the exact motive remains unclear as the investigation continues.
The killing marks the latest in a string of femicides that have drawn national attention in Greece this year.
