Physician, researcher and endurance athlete Georgios Tsianos will set off this week on an unprecedented journey across Greece, combining swimming, cycling, running, mountaineering and sailing to traverse the country from its northernmost point to its southernmost tip while collecting real-time physiological data on the human body under extreme exertion.
The expedition, named AMPHIBIAN, will take Mr. Tsianos from Ormenio, on Greece’s border with Bulgaria and Turkey, to Gavdos, the southernmost point in both Greece and continental Europe, crossing 13 regions over 12 operational days.
Mr. Tsianos will be supported by a specialized team of scientists, doctors, technologists and endurance athletes tracking his cardiovascular and respiratory function, body temperature regulation, blood glucose levels, fatigue and recovery throughout the journey, using wearable devices and telemetry systems designed to transmit and visualize data in real time despite unstable field connectivity.
Mr. Tsianos, born in Athens with roots in Thessaly, holds a bachelor’s degree in human physiology from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s in human physiology in extreme environments from King’s College London, and a doctorate from the University of Glasgow focused on human physiology at altitude and in cold conditions.
He earned his medical degree at the University of Ioannina and now works as a physician in Scotland’s remote Highlands region while holding an honorary teaching post at the University of Thessaly.
A decorated open-water marathon swimmer, Mr. Tsianos became the first person to swim across the open Aegean Sea in 2011, covering 101 kilometers from the Peloponnese to Crete in just over 28 hours.
He has twice summited Mount Everest, swam the English Channel in 2000 in a world-best time that year, and completed the grueling Marathon des Sables ultramarathon across the Sahara in 2015 — becoming the first person in the world to complete the “Ice Water Fire” challenge spanning three of the planet’s most demanding endurance feats.
The project receives support from Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence through the Foundation of the Hellenic World, as part of an initiative integrating AI into virtual and augmented reality research.
